While we cannot give a physical half-shekel to the Beit HaMikdash today, we can show Hakadosh Baruch Hu how much we desire the Beit HaMikdash, by giving zecher le’machatzit hashekel. Every Jew gave machatzit hashekel, and fulfilling this mitzvah today shows we are all part of Klal Yisrael.
